Other Retreats

Francis House: When Francis House is not in use and there are quiet times at the community, often in January and late August, some rooms in Francis House are available for personal retreats, using the main house for sleeping and accessing the hermitage for prayer during the day.

Prayer Hut:  Within a short walk to the main house, people may retreat for a day and an overnight in Agape’s prayer hut, small, cozy and perfect for short days of solitude.

Agape welcomes environmental, ecological, peace and justice, multicultural and multiethnic campus organization and individuals, to schedule a day(s) of work and reflection and overnights, including a weekend, with a community service component.  Rural immersion for a week or less, with outreach visits to other eco-villages, work in soup kitchens and shelters, visits to the elderly and needy.  We can accommodate dorm-style 20 people. Access to the breathtaking Quabbin Reservoir watershed for hiking and beauty and wildlife.  Volunteers for any length of time, always welcome.  Donations and meals are arranged with Agape staff according to numbers and length of time.

Community and Outreach to College Students

Agape has been involved with outreach on nonviolence, conflict resolution, compassionate listening, mindfulness and spirituality with college students for over 25 years.

Sustainability

The community features a straw bale house, solar energy, compost toilet, veggie car, fueled by vegetable oil, 34 acres of land and organic farming, heating both of the community residences only on wood, with wood-burning stoves, wood gathering being a big part of the community effort, to mention a few of our efforts at simple lifestyle.

Many students come to Agape for the following:

  • Independent study on community and sustainability. A student from Holy Cross and one from Smith, received credit for their independent study at Agape.
  • Community service opportunities and extended weekends for community service projects related to environmental programs on campus, including small group and large group discussions on sustainability and community.
  • Weekend rural immersion. Any campus organizations, especially those focusing on green education and environmental issues, including reduced lifestyle, can request a program at Agape for a day, a weekend, or longer.
  • Multicultural retreats and workshop opportunities available upon request.
  • Opportunity for rest, prayer, silence, to learn about vegetarianism, simple living and the relationship of contemplation and action.
  • Credit programs at colleges. Two college students from Boston College’s Contextual Education Ministry, related to its School for Theology and Ministry (STM), have received credit for their internships at Agape. Such a program may exist at your school.  Please inquire.
